Kumol rice is made by manually processing Bora Saul, a variety of sticky rice grown in Majuli, the world’s largest deltaic island in Assam.

Kumol rice, also known as Komal saul, is a type of rice from Assam that can be eaten without cooking: 

  • Preparation: Soak the rice in hot water for 15–30 minutes or room temperature for 1.5 hours. It’s ready to eat and can be eaten with milk, curd, jaggery, yogurt, mustard oil, onions, potato mash, or pickles. 
  • Taste: Kumol rice has a soft texture and a subtle flavor. It takes on the flavor of other dishes it’s added to. 
  • Nutrition: Kumol rice is rich in protein, crude fiber, vitamins, and minerals. 
  • History: Legend has it that the Ahom army ate Kumol rice during wars in the 17th century. 
  • Other uses: Kumol rice is often used as baby food in Assam. It can also be blended with other ingredients to make a breakfast favorite and sweet treat called Jolpaan. 
  • Growing: Kumol rice is grown naturally without chemical fertilizers.
